Journeymen Courses
The New Orleans Electrical Joint Apprenticeship
& Training Committee (NOEJATC) is presently offering the following
Journeyman Skill Improvement Courses:
George Meany National Labor College
The George Meany National Labor College (NLC) is offering a
Bachelor of Technical/Professional Studies degreed distance learning program
(120 credits) for our members who have a high school diploma or a GED. The
sixty college credit hours awarded to those journeyman who have completed
our apprenticeship program can be applied towards your degree. In addition
you may also apply any additional college credit hours you may have earned
through a two or four year university. The NLC also awards credits for life
skills, military training, service internships, etc. The NLC required
general education courses (English, Humanities, Math, Science and Social
Studies) are taken on-line. For additional information you may visit the
NLC’s web site,
www.georgemeany.org ,
the New Orleans Electrical JATC web site,
www.noejatc.org or contact the NOEJATC
Office at 504-835-9899. The George Meany National Labor College is a union
college staffed by union members for union members. Don’t miss out on this
opportunity for IBEW members to conveniently further their education.
Conduit Bending & Fabrication
Classes are scheduled to begin in the Summer 2009. Classes will
be held on Monday and Thursday evenings at the Training Center from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM.
This is a 36 hour (12 class nights) course. You must be in attendance
for ALL class nights to receive a completion certificate.
There is no registration fee for the Conduit Fabrication course; however you
must purchase a Conduit Bending & Conduit Fabrication Student Workbook at a
cost of $50.00. You must register with the NOEJATC Office and purchase
your student workbook in advance to participate.
Instrumentation & Process Control
Classes are scheduled to begin in the Fall 2009. Classes will
be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Training Center from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM.
This is a 60 hour (20 class nights) course. You must be in attendance
for ALL class nights to receive a completion certificate
and be eligible for Level 1, Level II Certification. There is no
registration fee for the Instrumentation & Process Control course. You must register with the NOEJATC Office and purchase
your student workbook in advance to participate.
Photovoltaic Systems
Classes are scheduled to begin in the Spring 2009. Classes will
be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings at the Training Center from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM.
This is a 45 hour (15 class nights) course. You must be in attendance
for ALL class nights to receive a completion certificate.
There is no registration fee for the Photovoltaic Systems Control course. You must register with the NOEJATC Office and purchase
your student workbook in advance to participate.
Tech Math
Classes are on-going and can be completed at your own pace at home if you
have a computer and internet access. There is a $115.00 registration fee for the
on-line Tech Math course
which includes the cost of your textbook.
If you are interested in any of the Journeyman Skill Improvement courses
listed you should contact the NOEJATC Office at telephone (504)
835-9899 or email to register.
Include your name, address information and IBEW card number.
AC Theory - Explores the application of DC theory, three-phase
systems and circuit calculations for basic systems and understanding the
design and function of DC and AC generators. Introduces series and
parallel inductive reactance, capacitance and capacitive reactance.
Topics covered, include the theory and the mathematical equations and the
associated step-by-step problem solving that play an essential role in
understanding the basics from the difference between DC and AC, through
inductive and capacitive reactance, impedance, filters and power factor
correction. Comprehend the parameters of series RL, RC, LC, RLC circuits,
Parallel RL, RC, RLC circuits. Also series and parallel resonance,
filters, and power factor. (Available as a self-paced computer
based training course.)
Applied
Codeology - A systematic "how to" guide on
reading, interpreting and understanding the National Electrical Code.
Develops code book skills by getting students orientated with the NEC and
its language. Develops skills to apply the NEC's Plan, Build, Use, and
Special chapters.
Blueprint
Reading - Covers the necessary skills required to interpret and
follow blueprint designs. Recognizes common scales used on blueprints,
understanding and drawing the electrical and mechanical symbols commonly
used on blueprints. Also covers understanding various applications of
residential, commercial and industrial blueprints.
Code
Calculations - Familiarize students with the necessary skills to
perform calculations in various electrical fundamentals and ensure that they
are in compliance with the National Electrical Code.
Conduit Bending
- Teaches the concepts of conduit bending and fabrication, including but not
limited to stubs, offsets, three and four way saddles, segment bending, and
concentric bending.
DC Theory -
Explores direct current principals and methods. Teaches the
fundamentals of electricity and DC circuits. In-depth coverage of
Ohm's law, voltage, current, resistance and power. Examine DC parallel
circuits, DC combination circuits, magnetism and generators, and DC circuit
analysis tools. (Available as a self-paced computer based training
course.)

Digital
Electronic - Designed to lead students through the theory and
applications of basic and advanced digital control circuits used throughout
the electrical industry. This course works through subject areas such as
digital logic gates, numeric displays & keyboards, asynchronous &
synchronous memories & Shift registers, and Digital/Analog converters.
(Available as a self-paced computer based training course.)
Instrumentation/Process
Control - Teaches instrumentation terms and symbols, industrial
measurements and control, pressure, flow, level and temperature.
Instruction in calibration and calibration, including proper documentation.
Teaches bench calibration and configuration of analog, digital and smart
instruments. Also fundamentals of automated process control, control
valves, control valve maintenance, analytical instrumentation, and
instrument installation and tubing techniques.
Journeyman Preparation - Preparation for the City of New Orleans
Class "D" Journeyman License Examination. (Available online.)
Motor Controls
- Explores motor controls and control relays. Teaches manual and
automatic operating devices, control diagrams and drawings, timed devices,
DC and AC speed controllers. Also covers installation, maintenance and
troubleshooting techniques.
Significant Changes to the NEC - To assist and enhance the
understanding of changes in the National Electrical Code.
Tech Math
- The technical math course is a math review. It is not a study of
electrical theory nor any specific topic covered in apprenticeship, and is
in addition to the minimum classroom hours required for apprenticeship. Tech
Math is designed to refresh math skills and to prepare the Journeyman or
apprentice for the study of electrical theory, conduit fabrication, code
calculations and other job skills. (Available online or as a
self-paced computer based training course.)
